I thought I'd share a fun combat I had recently after acquiring my new Military Targeting Computer. This perfectly illustrates how a more balanced build can easily destroy an otherwise difficult single-stat opponent. In this case, my build is primarily geared to weapons and shields, but with a healthy amount of engines that give enough boost to really shine against my Worth Opponent, who has focused almost entirely on shields.

As you can see, my opponent actually has slightly more in total stats than me, but they are all in defense. What's more, my weapons give me a significant amount of bonus to minimum damage, ensuring that I will tend to hit for more than my adversary. However, my opponent has more hull, and could still damage me enough to keep me from yarding other pirates, even if I win.

Trystia superior engines bonus: +90 Hull Points.

SUCCEED: Surprise Attack! (Chance: 90%)
First attack damage bonus: + 98! (Maximum Possible: 124)
Target's Weapons Malfunction Chance increased by 18% to 35%!

And here's what it all boils down to. With enough engines to gain the maximum bonus hull, a first attack, and a hefty malfunction penalty for my opponent, this battle has now completely swung in my direction. That first attack will almost eliminate my opponent's hull advantage, and ensure he will miss so often that I'll take hardly any damage at all.

And here, my opponent finally does actual damage to me. Up until this point, all of my opponent's hits have been peeling away bonus hull, and only now, when my adversary has a mere 53 hull left, have I even begun taking actual lasting damage. If not for my hull bonus, I'd have taken a full 91 points of damage by now, rather than a mere 1. Those 90 bonus hull points mean I'll be able to quickly move on to other targets after I defeat this pirate.

And with that, my opponent is reduced to slag, awaiting the swarms of regenebots to repair the ship. Despite the long combat, I've lost only 14 real hull points, which will regenerate faster than it takes to get enough energy to launch an attack in the first place.

Had my opponent chosen a more balanced build, like mine, the similar stat levels would have meant I likely would have taken FAR more damage, especially if I hadn't had a good advantage in engines. Despite all those heavy shields, every point above the amount of weapons I had was wasted in this particular combat, since it would have resolved the same even if my opponent had 1 million in defense, with all other stats staying the same.

Very cool. To everybody who thinks that Trystia has been ghost-writing the Combat Recaps that I've been sending out - Sad

Seriously, though - I like advising myself out of a job.

One minor point - it's clear from this combat recap that the choice of weapon that the worthy opponent used was poor. They aren't going to win any battles by damage, so they should run a Graviton Beam Array for the damage modifier and critical damage.

Oh, good piece of advice, though I'd like to add in, that as a counter-strategy, if I had found that my worthy opponent has a small amount of critical chance, I could always splurge a little on NOMing my Class VIII Energy Shields to negate those critical hits, regaining my sizable advantage. However, a Graviton Beam Array would also have given my opponent a +1 minimum damage modifier, for a maximum hit against me of up to 7. It might seem small, but in a fight that takes this long, even tiny amounts of damage can add up.

So, excellent additional tip, and I hope this was a good example for everyone!

I'll second Bridgeburners here on both things.

Nicely written walkthrough, but your opponent has a seriously messed up build : they have nommed an FBA but are running with a turtle setup. An upgraded FBA can be nice for a juggernaut build for the bit of weapons and engines and a little anti-malf as well, but in a pure turtle it is a real waste of a weapon. Actually putting on some heavy armour would more effective against most opponents...

I would suggest a bit more editing for turtle fights though, cutting down a lot of the first exchange would not lose any of the point I think. Once you have fights with people with lots of armour as well as turtle builds they can take a while.
